Dear Fellow Parishioners of St. Benedict:
Let us begin this weekend by shouting: “Happy Mother’s Day” to all of the wonderful women of our parish who are celebrating and being celebrated today. Today is always a great reminder of the importance of the women role models -- especially our Mothers, Grandmothers, Great Grandmothers -- who shared and spent so much of their lives with and for us. I will get to Pennsylvania later today to see my Mother, who recently turned 90, and celebrate Mother’s Day with her.
Another reminder is that this coming Thursday -- May 18 -- is not Ascension Thursday in the dioceses of New Jersey, This change was made permanent last year. We will observe the Ascension next Sunday.
The following weekend -- Saturday, May 27 -- there will be no 5:00 pm Mass. Instead we will celebrate the Vigil of Pentecost at 8:00 pm. This is a celebration we revived in our parish in 2019. This Vigil is similar to the Easter Vigil, though less elaborate in scope. That Mass replaces the ordinary Sunday vigil. The remaining Masses on Sunday will not be affected by this change. At the Pentecost Vigil five adults will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Let us pray for them and their families.
The students of SBS are holding their annual walk-a-thon this Thursday on the SJV track. The money raised is going to assist in the strengthening of the security measures in our school. If you would like to sponsor a walker please make contact with the school.
The school year is quickly winding down and we are planning several summer projects on the campus. There are some slots available for the Summer Camp and for the religious education summer academy, week 3. Please make contact with the parish or the school as soon as possible to secure a spot in either (or both) camps.
With great affection for all Mothers and sincere prayers for all,
Fr. Garry
