We hope that everyone had an enjoyable and blessed Christmas. Again, Father Adam, our deacons, and the entire staff of the parish church and school want to thank each of you for your thoughtfulness, generosity, prayers, and presence during this most blessed season.
This weekend we observe the Solemnity of the Holy Family. This liturgical celebration between Christmas and the Feast of Mary, Mother of God (January 1st) reminds us, not only of the intercession of the Holy Family, but the importance of all families being holy. While there are many definitions, styles, and experiences of family in our society and throughout all of history, a nurturing and positive environment, filled with faith, love, mercy, and warmth is a necessary element in each of our lives. Each one of us is filled with those memories, those of our own childhood, and for many of you the family that you formed years ago. We are so grateful that our church and school provide nurturing in faith and formation for so many young families. May the Lord continue to bless each of our families -- families of origin, the families we have formed, and our extended families -- with his love and grace.
As I alluded to above, this week we observe the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Coinciding as it does with New Year’s Day, we are given the opportunity to dedicate each year anew to the intercession and guidance of our Blessed Mother. Wednesday, January 1st is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be celebrated at 5pm on Tuesday, December 31st (New Year’s Eve) and at 9 am on New Year’s Day. We will not have an evening Mass on New Year’s Day.
Speaking of the New Year, let us all pray that 2025 is a year of peace, prosperity, and well-being for each of us, and for our world. Things have been and remain difficult, but with firm faith, and a shared vision, we will manage our way through it all.
This is the Year of Jubilee -- a year of hope. On the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, Pope Francis will open the Holy Door for the Basilica of St Mary Major, with the Holy Door for the Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls being opened on Sunday, January 5th, the Vigil of Epiphany. Inspired by the message of Pope Francis who recently said: “Hope is not a passive virtue, which merely waits for things to happen, it is a supremely active virtue that helps make them happen,” we are challenged to bring that hope and a sense of healing into our world.
Have a blessed week -- and a safe and joyful New Year. Fr. Garry
